List of religions and spiritual traditions

Despite the fact that the term "religion" is hard to define, one common definition given in religious studies classes is

[a] system of symbols which acts to establish powerful, pervasive, and long-lasting moods and motivations in men by formulating conceptions of a general order of existence and clothing these conceptions with such an aura of factuality that the moods and motivations seem uniquely realistic.

The myths, symbols, customs, and sacred histories found in many faiths are meant to explain the universe's or life's beginnings or to provide purpose to life, the Divine. They frequently base their beliefs about the universe and human nature on morals, ethics, religious precepts, or a desired way of life. There are around 4,200 religions, churches, denominations, religious bodies, faith groups, tribes, civilizations, movements, or ultimate concerns, according to some estimates.

Although the terms "faith" and "belief system" are frequently used interchangeably, religion is distinct from private belief in that it involves public participation. Clerical hierarchies, a definition of what membership or adherence entails, congregations of lay people, regular gatherings or services for the purpose of worshiping a deity or praying, holy sites (natural or architectural), or religious texts are just a few examples of the organized behaviors found in the majority of religions. In liturgical rituals, certain religions also utilize a holy language. Sermons, celebrations of the actions of a god or gods, sacrifices, festivals, feasts, trance, rituals, liturgies, ceremonies, worship, initiations, funerals, marriages, meditation, invocation, mediumship, music, art, dance, public service, and other facets of human culture can all be considered religious practices.

Along with many other paranormal and supernatural events, religious beliefs have also been used to explain parapsychological phenomena including reincarnation, near-death experiences, and out-of-body experiences.

World religions, which refers to transcultural, international faiths; indigenous religions, which refers to smaller, culture-specific or nation-specific religious groups; and new religious movements, which refers to recently developed faiths, are the three broad categories into which some scholars studying the subject have separated religions. According to social constructionism, a contemporary academic theory of religion, religion is a modern concept that implies all forms of worship and spiritual practice follow a model similar to the Abrahamic religions as an orientation system that aids in defining human beings and interpreting reality. As such, it holds that religion as a concept has been inappropriately applied to non-Western cultures that are either not based upon such systems or in which these systems are a significantly simpler construct.
